Dating

When I was in high school, I had this standard for myself that I wasn't going to date anyone till I was sixteen. Well low and behold, a guy transferred to my school about three months before I turned sixteen, and I was super excited because he seemed to like me and I liked the idea of a guy liking me. We would hang out all the time before school, during school lunch, and after school. I remember he had asked me to be his girlfriend and I had told him that my parents wouldn't allow me to "date" anyone till I was sixteen. Well it came to my sixteenth birthday and he had asked me to be his girlfriend, and of course I said yes.      It didn't take me long to realize that this guy was definitely not someone that I wanted in my life forever. All we did was hangout at the skatepark or at school. I never went on an actual date with the guy. I’ve realized that dating today is very rare. A lot of the time, people will “hangout” but won’t take the time to go on d...

Sexual and Gender Identity

It is baffling to me that today, it is so hard to talk about the subject of differences between males and females. Now a days, people can identify as "transgender, gender-neutral, non-binary, pangender, genderqueer, two-spirit, third gender, and all, none or a combination of these."(TeenTalk) Society has come to a conclusion that if a little boy plays dress up or is interested in doll houses, then he must be a girl in a boys body or must be homosexual. We are also seeing that males and females are equal. What has the world come to? In class, we learned about the different traits of men and women. We were asked, “When you think of a woman, what are some traits that we automatically assume?” My classmates and I made a list of traits such as a woman has the ability to be aware of facial expressions more than men. Women are more aware of their relationships, they are expression oriented, and have the ability to make more connections whether that be with pe...

How Does Class Affect the Cultures of Family?

All around the world, we are surrounded by people form different cultures; they may have a different ways of life, different traditions, or different beliefs or religions. In the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, men are taught to wear white button up shirts in the United States of America, but in other parts of the world, it is part of other cultures to wear different forms of clothing. Culture is what makes every group of people different from one another. Did you know that families have different cultures as well? Every single family has their own little difference that makes them unique from other families.     How are these cultures created and put into affect? Well, cultures can be formed through the "class" of a family. Everything from how much money they may have, how they view themselves, what their hobbies or habits are, what education they may receive, all the way to what clothing they wear, what they may own, where they live and what...

Family Theories

Because families are so complex we can never have truths about families. They are all so different. This past week in class we talked about how we can use theories to understand families better. The main goal of theories is to see how families function and work together. I talked about how family dynamics differ in my last post a little bit, but now I am trying to understand what exactly helps us understand how some families work together.     First, I want to talk about exchange theory within the family. Exchange theory basically explains that there needs to be a balance between the relationship. If there isn't a balance, the relationship will start to fall apart. Have you ever been in a relationship where you just weren't having your needs met? That is because there isn't a balance of exchange. There needs to be some give and take. For example, if you ask someone out and they say yes, you are in some way, receiving a reward. This will most likely st...
